Hurricane season in Naples: a practical guide
The back story

About Hurricane season in Naples: a practical guide
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Most days in that time are calm, but a little planning makes a trip stress-free.
The season
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the peak usually from mid-August to mid-October. Hurricane Ian in September 2022 brought a severe storm surge to Naples, and the city has been rebuilding since. Most visits in season pass without a storm, and summer brings hot, humid days with short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms.
Before you book
Buy travel insurance when you book, not when a storm appears: policies generally do not cover a storm once it has been named. Read the hurricane or cancellation policy of your hotel or rental, and of your airline.
Most summer and autumn days in Naples are calm; just plan for the ones that are not.
If a storm is forecast
Follow the National Hurricane Center and Collier County Emergency Management, and do what local officials say. Know whether your accommodation is in an evacuation zone, keep your car fuelled and your phone charged, and leave early if told to: traffic builds fast on I-75. Do not drive through flooded roads.

Everyday weather safety
Florida has frequent lightning in summer. When thunder rolls, leave the beach, the water and the golf course and wait about 30 minutes after the last thunder. Rip currents can follow storms offshore, so swim near lifeguards where possible and heed beach flags.
Our advice: in hurricane season, insure your trip at booking, stay flexible, sign up for local alerts on arrival and follow official advice; the reward is quieter beaches and lower rates.
