About Key West by ferry: the back story

Key West sits at the end of the Florida Keys, closer to Havana than to Miami. From the Naples area the quickest way there is by sea, on the Key West Express from Fort Myers Beach.

The ferry

The Key West Express runs high-speed catamarans from Fort Myers Beach to Key West in about three and a half hours. By car, the drive through Miami and down the Keys takes most of a day.

Old Town

Key West’s Old Town is a grid of wooden houses, gardens and bars around Duval Street, with the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum and the Southernmost Point buoy among the classic sights.

From the Naples coast, Key West is easier by sea than by road.

Sunset at Mallory Square

Every evening, crowds gather at Mallory Square to watch the sun go down over the water, with street performers and food stalls.

Our advice: stay at least one night rather than doing a day trip, book the ferry well ahead in winter, and check the current schedule, which varies by season.
