The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge protects a large share of Sanibel’s bay-side mangroves. Wildlife Drive and the refuge trails are best at low tide, when wading birds feed on the flats. Check the US Fish & Wildlife Service page for current opening days and any storm-recovery closures before you go.
